Junkanoo

Supporting the growth of Junkanoo participation on Long Island.

What is Junkanoo?

Junkanoo is one of The Bahamas’ most powerful cultural traditions, blending music, dance, and intricate costume design into a vibrant expression of national identity. Rooted in West African heritage and shaped by generations of Bahamians, Junkanoo continues to evolve while remaining a symbol of unity, resilience, and community pride.

The Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture supports the preservation and expansion of Junkanoo nationwide through funding, training, youth programs, and cultural policy. The National Junkanoo Committee (NJC) plays a central role in organizing parades, setting national standards, guiding group development, and ensuring the cultural integrity of the tradition. Together, these bodies help strengthen Junkanoo across all islands, providing opportunities for artistic growth and cultural celebration throughout the country.

How Junkanoo Grows On Long Island

Junkanoo grows through training, practice, and regular opportunities to take part. The focus is on building confidence, creativity, and pride while keeping the tradition active across the island.

Schools First

Primary and high school groups help students connect early to Bahamian culture and provide them with a solid foundation in Junkanoo.

Develop The Craft

Participants learn music, costume design, dance, and performance skills that strengthen both individual talent and group quality.

Annual Participation

Regular events keep Junkanoo alive. Annual parades and festivals that showcase Junkanoo help junior and senior performers grow each year.
